Hi, I’m Alanys aka “Jandro”
I am queer, Latino immigrant and software engineer who believes in a future where technology serves people, and prosperity is shared, not gatekept.
I was born & raised in Cuba and came to the U.S. as a kid who was part of one of many waves of families chasing more after the collapse of the Soviet Union. My family was in search of more stability, more opportunity, more hope.
I don’t remember every detail of that crossing, but I remember how it felt to leave something behind before I even understood what it meant to belong. That tension between becoming and remembering, between survival and self has shaped a lot of who I am.
I been fortunate to travel to many beautiful places in the world. I live in Chicago now.
about this page
I created this page as place to reflect. Reflect on technology, queerness, identity, healing, money, culture, and whatever else is clawing at my chest. It started as a blog. Now it feels more like a digital memoir in progress.
I love writing. I love dancing. I love people and “the human experience”. I love a flamboyant brooch and a strong Manhattan. And if you hand me a chocolate cookie and a crime doc, I’m yours.
I read this quote years ago, not knowing how deeply it would root itself in me… through exile, identity, and everything in between:
“Men are like the stars; some generate their own light while others reflect the brilliance they receive.”
— José Martí
I hope to do both.
Thanks for being here.
